  1. Crooked and dislocated, the trio of splintering trunks stabbed up out of the rocks towards the thick grey sky above- dismembered, woody limbs flailing at the clouds motionlessly. That the ground bore no greenery, and likewise no discernible soil or nutrient base, and that the trees somehow still grew, ever so slowly, and had been doing so since long before any of them had even been born themselves, the villagers agreed was a symptom of a foulness that rode down on the northern wind and permeated the craggly mountainside west of the village with an odor so rank it turned even the strongest of stomachs. There must’ve been something in that air that those “trees” somehow fed on, a sustenance so sinister that more than a single brave soul had claimed of the effect it’d had on them when they approached the trees. For drawing in quite close, about within arms reach, so I was told, one would find a faint, tragic wailing sound ringing out ever-so-slightly from the sickly black bark. And the closer one approached to those wretched trees, such as the recollection was made to me, the wailing would scream out louder and louder, as if the trunks of the trees themselves were sounding out their agony. Whatever came down in that vile wind, it tortured those poor, awful trees as much as it sustained them.

  3. An old man, an older woman and she stand, alone. The reality in which they have currently assembled proves unstable, deteriorating quickly. The old man begins. “No,” the older woman interrupts, “she will tell us what we need to know.” She looks at the older woman defiantly, and then she glances at the old man, softening. “The only way is through,” she states aloud, crisp, clear, unafraid. The old man crumbles, defeated. “To attempt to travel together would indeed be a form of suicide, from here, none could know of what type,” the older woman laments. “Nevertheless, to travel otherwise, probabilities remain the same.” “I cannot travel with you,” the old man reminds the older woman. “Nor I with her,” the older woman retorts. “Nor I with him,” she states.
